Free Nursing Generators & Templates

Last reviewed: by Jayson Minagawa, BSN, RN

Free generators that take the friction out of repetitive nursing tasks: Epic SmartPhrase building, NCLEX mnemonic generation, and professional callout/sick-call message templates. SBAR template, care-plan generator, and brain-sheet templates are in active build for 2026.

Charting at the bedside is a hostage situation between you and the EHR. Epic SmartPhrases save me 90 minutes per shift — but the documentation on how to build them is buried in a PDF nobody reads. The SmartPhrase Builder spits out the exact syntax Epic expects. Same logic applied to mnemonics and callouts.

Why generators belong in a nurse's daily workflow

Documentation is the largest non-clinical task on the floor — most studies put bedside charting at 25–35% of a nurse's shift, with EHR-related work consuming more time than direct patient interaction in many specialties. The single highest-leverage way to claw back that time is to template the repeatable pieces. Epic SmartPhrases (referred to as DotPhrases or smartphrases internally) let you bind a short keyboard shortcut to a multi-paragraph charting block with embedded variables, drop-down picklists, and timestamps. A well-designed SmartPhrase library can compress a 6-minute admission note into 90 seconds of editing. The Epic SmartPhrase Builder on this hub generates the exact syntax Epic accepts — no more guessing where the @ goes or whether the SmartList wildcard takes brackets or curly braces.

Mnemonic generation serves a different purpose. NCLEX prep, pharmacology, and clinical assessment depend on memorizing dense lists — drug classes, lab cutoffs, assessment sequences, electrolyte derangements — that don't compress into intuition. Mnemonics are pattern-based memory hacks that survive cramming and recall under stress. The nursing curriculum has produced classics (MONA for MI, ABCDE for trauma, MUDPILES for anion-gap acidosis), but every nurse eventually needs custom mnemonics for the dozen new drugs, lab panels, or assessment frames specific to their unit. The Mnemonics Generator on this hub takes a list of items and produces multiple mnemonic candidates, ranked by ease of recall.

The Callout Message Generator addresses a more subtle workflow problem: the awkward, anxiety-laden, and sometimes career-affecting moment of calling out sick. New nurses (and many experienced ones) draft and redraft these texts because the wrong tone — too casual, too apologetic, too clinical — strains the relationship with the charge nurse and manager. The generator produces a baseline message that hits the four required elements (notification, reason, request for coverage if applicable, return-to-work expectation) without overshare or capitulation. Customize and send.

Frequently asked

Will SmartPhrases work in my hospital's Epic?

Yes — SmartPhrases are user-level Epic objects. They work in any Epic instance you have a login for. The Builder generates the exact syntax (SmartLinks, wildcards, formatting) Epic accepts.

Are SBAR / care plan templates coming?

Yes. SBAR template + interactive builder, NANDA-driven care plan generator, head-to-toe assessment template, and nurse brain sheet templates are in active build for 2026. Subscribe to the newsletter for launch.

Are these generators tracked or logged?

Inputs run client-side; outputs are not logged. The mnemonics generator uses an AI backend (anonymous, no input retention).
