Quick answer
Free nursing CEUs, at a glance
Boards range from no CE at all for RN renewal (Colorado, Indiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, South Dakota, Wisconsin) to 30 contact hours every two years, and many accept practice hours or a national certification instead. Free, accredited courses cover a general requirement several times over.
The hours nurses end up paying for are the required topics: Florida’s laws and rules, New York’s infection control, Illinois’s implicit bias. Pick your state in the directory below to see yours.
ANA gives non-members 25 courses at $0, about 46 contact hours. CDC charges no fee for any of its CE.
A 7-day trial is not free. Incredible Health’s courses, free until May 2024, now cost $37.50 after the trial, so they are not in this directory.

Completely free means no account and no fee for the certificate. Free, account needed means you register first, at no cost. Certificate fee means the course is open to everyone but the certificate your board accepts costs money. CE Broker: reports for you means the provider says it sends completions to CE Broker; you upload means it does not, and not stated means its page does not say.

Which free CE providers are worth your time?

These are the providers behind most of the courses in the directory, with what each one actually charges. Every figure was read on the provider’s own page on September 30, 2026.

Provider What is free Accreditation What you need
ANA 25 courses, about 46 contact hours, at $0 for non-members ANCC An ANA account and a $0 checkout
CDC Every CE activity: CDC states that it charges no fees Joint accreditation, including ANCC A free CDC TRAIN account to claim credit
HHS Think Cultural Health Culturally and linguistically appropriate care for nurses (4 hours) and behavioral health (5 hours) Nursing contact hours stated per course A free account
University of Washington National HIV Curriculum (48.5 hours, 38 in pharmacology) and the hepatitis B and C courses Nursing contact hours stated per module A free account
APNA eLearning Six opioid and substance use courses, 0.75 to 2 hours each ANCC A free APNA eLearning account
PCSS-MOUD The 8-hour substance use disorder training that meets the DEA requirement 9.25 nursing credits, through AAAP A free account

Medscape Education is jointly accredited, including by the ANCC, through July 2028, and most nurses know it as a free source. Its activities sit behind a Medscape login, so we could not read a price on any course page and it is not in the directory table. Use it, but check the activity before you rely on it.

What free CEUs does the CDC offer?

CDC is jointly accredited to award nursing contact hours and states that no fees are charged for its CE activities. You take the course on CDC’s site and claim the certificate on CDC TRAIN, which needs a free account. The directory lists eleven of CDC’s opioid, pain and substance use modules, most between half an hour and an hour, which are the easiest way to meet a small prescriber requirement such as North Carolina’s one hour or New Jersey’s one hour on opioids.

NIOSH’s Workplace Violence Prevention for Nurses is now course WB5032: 2.5 contact hours in six units, free, with credit available until July 2029. It replaced the older WB4525R version, which some lists still quote.

Pro tip: CDC does not report to CE Broker. If your state uses CE Broker, upload the certificate yourself the day you finish, while you still know where it is.

How many free contact hours does the ANA offer?

On September 30, 2026, 25 courses in ANA’s catalog cost $0 for non-members, about 45.9 contact hours in total. You do not need to be a member, but you do need an ANA account and a checkout at $0. See You Now, the podcast series on inequity in care, is now four separate 4-hour courses, and Mental Health Trailblazers is two courses of 3 and 4 hours. The rest is mostly short infection control modules and workplace violence.

Not everything in the catalog is free to everyone. Some courses are free only to members, and ANA’s human trafficking course costs non-members $25; for that topic, HHS SOAR and Nemours offer free versions, both in the directory. Membership adds more CE and $100 off ANCC certification exams. Use our nursing certification comparison to see whether a certification pays for itself in your specialty.

What other providers offer free nursing CEUs?

State boards and state agencies are the most overlooked source, and for required topics often the only free one. The Kentucky Board of Nursing gives every nurse its courses free, including the one-hour dementia course Kentucky requires. Alabama’s board runs its mandatory class for new licensees at no cost. Iowa’s health department offers the only approved mandatory reporter courses free, New York’s child abuse reporting training is free through the state, and Nebraska’s health department posts the opioid modules its prescribers need. The directory flags each of these with the state it is approved for.

NursingCE.com rotates a small set of free courses; two were free when we checked. HHS SOAR covers human trafficking in 2 hours, and Nemours offers a 2-hour human trafficking course from a Florida Board of Nursing approved provider.

Several well-known providers, including Nurse.com, Wild Iris and Elite Learning, blocked our checks, so we could not confirm what is free on their sites today. They are left out rather than listed on trust.

Where can nurses find free specialty-specific CEUs?

For psychiatric and addiction nursing, APNA’s free opioid use disorder courses and the PCSS-MOUD training are the strongest options. For infectious disease, the University of Washington’s National HIV Curriculum and its hepatitis B and C courses carry a large share of pharmacology hours, which is useful for nurse practitioners who need pharmacology credit. For long-term care, CDC’s nursing home infection preventionist training is free, though the page gives no exact contact hours.

The free 8-hour substance use disorder training from PCSS-MOUD meets the one-time DEA training requirement that took effect June 27, 2023, and awards 9.25 nursing credits through AAAP. That requirement applies to DEA-registered prescribers, which in nursing means APRNs. Staff RNs do not hold DEA registrations and are not required to take it. PCSS-MOUD’s federal funding ended on September 29, 2026; AAAP says the course remains available. Who needs it, what counts and the free options are in our guide to the DEA 8-hour training for NPs.

Specialty organizations bundle CE into membership rather than giving it away: AACN membership is $78 a year. If you’re considering a specialty, our nursing career change quiz and certification comparison cover the CE each certification expects.

All 51 boards

Which CE topics does each state require?

Many boards want hours on a named topic, not just a total, and those are the hours nurses end up paying for the week their license is due. This is each board's list as its own site, administrative code or statute states it, checked in Sep 2026. The last column says how many of those topics have a free course in the directory above.

A topic a board requires from its own approved providers, such as a state laws and rules course, only counts when it comes from one of them; a general free course will not substitute. Each state name opens that state's licensure page, which lists the rules and sources in full.

How every row here is checked

  1. Each course on its own page. All 100 courses were opened on the provider’s course page or its accreditation statement, and the hours, accreditor, price and CE Broker reporting were read there, not from a list of lists. Each row shows the month it was checked.
  2. Each state rule at its source. All 125 topic mandates were read on the state board’s site, the administrative code or the statute, and each links to that source. A rule we could not find stated by the state is left out rather than guessed.
  3. A free trial is not free. A course that becomes a subscription after a trial, or charges for the certificate your board accepts, is labelled that way or left out.
  4. A required topic only counts from a provider the board accepts. A free course is linked to a state’s topic only when its page or the board shows that it qualifies.
  5. Nothing stays listed on trust. The site’s build fails when a course has gone 200 days without a re-check or its credit has expired, so a stale row cannot quietly stay up.

The whole dataset is open: download it as JSON (CC BY 4.0, credit The Nursing Directory). Found a course that has changed? Tell us and it will be re-checked.

What free CEUs do government agencies offer nurses?

Beyond CDC, the federal sources that award nursing contact hours at no cost are HHS’s Think Cultural Health (culturally and linguistically appropriate care, 4 hours for nurses), HHS SOAR for human trafficking, and the SAMHSA-funded PCSS-MOUD substance use training. State health departments fill in the state-specific topics, as the Iowa, New York, Nebraska and Texas courses in the directory show.

One federal source is often listed as free nursing CE and is not: AHRQ’s PSNet WebM&M cases carry physician CME only. OSHA’s Worker Safety in Hospitals pages are worth reading on safe patient handling and workplace violence, but check for a certificate before you count them.

Can nurses earn free CEUs from podcasts?

Yes, and the easiest free one is ANA’s. The See You Now series is four 4-hour courses and Mental Health Trailblazers two more of 3 and 4 hours, all $0 for non-members. Audio CE from commercial providers is usually part of a subscription; CEUfast’s annual plan is $39.99.

If you’re preparing for the NCLEX rather than renewing, see our NCLEX-PN study guide and NCLEX study while working guide.

How should nurses track their continuing education?

The biggest mistake nurses make with CE is losing certificates or forgetting which courses they’ve completed, and it only matters when you are audited, which is the worst time to go looking.

If your state uses CE Broker, check the CE Broker line under each course in the directory. “Reports for you” means the provider says it sends your completion; for everything else, upload the certificate yourself. Most of the free courses here, including all of CDC’s, do not report. The free CE App (myceapp.com) is a tracker, not a course provider: it holds your certificates in one place.

Pro tip: Create a dedicated email folder or Google Drive folder for CE certificates. Forward every completion certificate to this folder immediately. When renewal time comes, you’ll have everything in one place. Also keep a simple spreadsheet tracking provider, course title, hours earned, and date completed.

What are the best low-cost CE options for nurses?

If your state’s required topics have no free course, or you want everything in one place, these are the cheapest ways to buy it.

Provider Cost What you get
RN.org $19.99/year Unlimited courses, reported to CE Broker for you
CEUfast $39.99/year Annual plan
Incredible Health 7-day trial, then $37.50 State renewal bundles; free until May 2024, which is why older lists still call it free
AACN membership $78/year Critical care CE with membership

At $19.99 a year, RN.org is the cheapest unlimited option we found, and the only low-cost one that says it reports to CE Broker. Before you buy for a required topic such as Florida’s laws and rules, confirm the provider is approved by your board for that topic.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the state. Colorado, Indiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, South Dakota and Wisconsin require no CE for RN renewal, while many boards want 20 to 30 contact hours every two years, and several accept practice hours or a national certification instead. Many boards also require hours on named topics. Pick your state in the directory on this page to see its total and its required topics.

For general hours, usually yes: most boards accept courses from ANCC-accredited providers, and every course in the directory names its accreditor. Required topics are different. Some boards accept only their own approved providers for a topic, such as Florida’s laws and rules, New York’s infection control or Texas’s human trafficking course, and a general free course will not count there.

The general hours, yes: ANA’s free catalog alone is about 46 contact hours, more than any state’s total. The required topics are harder. About a quarter of the state topic mandates we mapped have a verified free course; the rest need a board-approved provider, and the directory says which.

Yes. The directory marks each course as completely free, free with an account, or certificate fee. Watch for free trials: Incredible Health’s courses were free until May 2024 and now cost $37.50 after a 7-day trial, which is why they are not listed.

In nursing the terms are used interchangeably. A contact hour is 60 minutes of organized learning. A CEU technically equals 10 contact hours in some systems. Most state boards count contact hours.

It depends on the certification body, and they are not all ANCC. CCRN renews through the AACN Certification Corporation, CEN through BCEN, and credentials such as MEDSURG-BC and PMH-BC through ANCC. Free courses from accredited providers generally count as contact hours, but most bodies require a set share in your specialty or tied to their exam blueprint. Check your certifying body’s renewal handbook before relying on general CE.

No. The one-time 8-hour training that took effect June 27, 2023 applies to practitioners who hold a DEA registration, which in nursing means APRNs who prescribe controlled substances. Staff RNs do not hold DEA registrations. The free PCSS-MOUD version awards 9.25 nursing credits that can count toward renewal.

For general hours, the ANA (25 courses at $0 for non-members, about 46 contact hours) and the CDC (no fee for any of its CE) cover more than any state’s total. For required topics, the best source is often your own state: boards and state agencies in Kentucky, Iowa, New York, Nebraska and Texas run free courses for their own mandates. Pick your state in the directory to see yours.

Most do not. The CDC’s courses do not mention CE Broker, so you upload the certificate yourself. The directory shows what each provider says about CE Broker under every course. RN.org, at $19.99 a year, says it reports for you.

Check who your board accepts for that topic. For general hours most boards accept any ANCC-accredited provider. For topics such as Florida’s laws and rules or New York’s infection control, the course must come from a provider the board approves, and the directory links a free course to a topic only when its page or the board shows that it qualifies.

Yes. AAAP’s 8-Hour SUD 101 Training is free, awards 9.25 nursing credits and says it fulfills the DEA requirement. It is only required of practitioners who hold a DEA registration, so staff RNs do not need it.
